KARUNA HOUSE HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS GALA
Written by Ballzer on November 15, 2024
Karuna Housing just celebrated their official one year anniversary in La Crosse. In the year since it launched, Karuna Inc. has transformed the way people experiencing homelessness can find support and build a “life worth living.”
They are planning a Gala event to raise more money to expand its innovative model. Executive Director Julie McDermid joined the Morning Buzz to talk about the work they’re doing in our community, share information on a grant they’re receiving, future plans, and the Gala:
Staff and volunteers have worked tirelessly to provide 24/7 support and connection for La
Crosse’s most vulnerable residents so they can build healthy, resilient, productive lives. The
nonprofit’s pilot project, a rented duplex near the Goosetown Neighborhood, currently houses 11
residents, nine men and two women, ranging in age from 21 to 61.
Many of the residents have intensive mental health needs, struggle with substance use or have
other persistent health issues. All of them have experienced chronic homelessness and have
not found success through traditional programming.
Residents are required to work if they can or do community service. They each have their own
bedroom but share cooking duties and other house chores. They receive regular visits from St.
Clare Health Mission Mobile Med Team.
“Being accepted into the Karuna program, I felt loved, supported and understood,” one resident
said, according to a press release. “Like I have a second chance.”
The nonprofit hopes to expand on this successful model, either by building or purchasing
additional housing units. Its goal is to shelter all of the target population in La Crosse,
approximately 30 to 40 individuals.
