UPDATE: The 4th Annual La Crosse Juneteenth Community Celebration has been moved to LOGAN MIDDLE SCHOOL.
From noon-7 the community is invited to this FREE, family-friendly event. Everyone is invited to enjoy food, live entertainment, a youth fun fair, history, education, and connection in celebration of Black Americans.
Andrew Rasmussen, operations and development associate for Black Leaders Acquiring Collective Knowledge, and Mia Davis, VP of Black Student Leaders, joined the Morning Buzz to tell us what’s lined up for this week and why it’s important:
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th, the last group of slaves in the south were given the news was given that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. For more information about Juneteenth, see their History page.
There will be hundreds of food vouchers free to the community this Saturday, and booths with local businesses and organizations. Be sure to check out the August Ball booth, preparing for 2025! This year’s food vendors include: Mia’s Kitchen, Press Break, Mama K’s Pizza, and Black Student Leaders’ Birria Tacos!
