I vaguely remember hearing this story years ago but have never heard someone sing the original lyrics. According to legend, the first lyrics to “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” were pretty dark and sad. Judy Garland didn’t like the idea of her character in Meet Me In St. Louis singing a song about death and ruining Christmas so she asked that the lyrics be changed. Songwriter Hugh Martin was against the idea, but eventually caved to change the lyrics to what we hear today.
