Ashley Judd gave an interview, from her hospital bed, to describe the horrific accident that nearly took her leg.
Ashley was in Africa, where she spends time each year doing research and activism work, and she fell and shattered her leg. She shared her story on an Instagram live video with New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof, but also used it to raise awareness of issues of poverty and animal protection in Africa.
At the 5:30 mark, Ashley explains what she was doing when the accident occurred and the unimaginable turn of events.
“Accidents happen — and there was a fallen tree on the path which I didn’t see and I had a very powerful stride going and I just fell over this tree,” she told New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof on Friday. “As I was breaking my leg, I knew it was being broken.”
It took 55 hours to get her from the jungle to an operating table in South Africa. She showed the stick she was biting down on to cope with the excruciating pain. Can you even imagine? I get light-headed and queasy just thinking about it.
Judd also acknowledged the “privilege” that allowed her to receive relatively quick medical care, considering their location and circumstances. She said, “Most of the people I know would not have had access.”
