This year, the crowd funded animated short film version of the book, “Hair Love,” won an Oscar. The story is about an African American father learning to style his daughter’s hair. Matthew A.Cherry, a former NFL player turned author and filmmaker, said watching videos of dads, including Milwaukee’s DJ Hines and his daughter Chloe, inspired the story. “Hair Love was done because we wanted to see more representation in animation,” Cherry said in his acceptance speech. “We wanted to normalize black hair.”
HBO Max has plans to turn it into an animated series.
Now, the book is on Audible, narrated by Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s daughter, Blue Ivy!
