BLACK LIVES MATTER! INTERVIEW WITH LOCAL ACTIVIST, SHAUNDEL SPIVEY
Written by Ballzer on June 3, 2020
You’re angry, sad, disgusted, and feeling a range of emotions surrounding the murder of George Floyd at the hands of a white police officer. And you’ve often thought of the countless others who have lost their lives to social injustice. Maybe you got out and were part of the peaceful protests in downtown La Crosse recently. Or maybe you find yourself sitting in your home, with your children, thinking to yourself…”How do we stop this? What can I do? Something needs to change, but I feel helpless.” You’re not alone.
Shaundel Spivey is on the District of La Crosse School Board and he’s the College Connections Manager at WWTC. He’s also the former Cultural Liaison in the district and was the recipient of the Martin Luther King Leadership Award in 2019. He’s also the Co-Founder and President of the local non profit organization, Black Leaders Acquiring Collective Knowledge. We had a long, but extremely important, conversation with Shaundel about starting the process of change in our own community.
Part 1- Introducing Shaundel Spivey, and what he does for our community. What it’s like to be an African American man, plus a leader and mentor to our youth, during this time.
Part 2– How members of the black community can help and what we can do to help change the perspective of our community, as a whole.
Part 3– What we can do collectively to promote, and start the movement for, change in our community. Also, local resources for education and support.
