Working from home is a reality for a lot of us these days, and many of us are new to this. We wanted to talk to a pro about how to help make working from home work for you!
Dr. Tracey Wilen is a researcher, author and speaker on the impact of technology on society, work, and careers. A former visiting scholar at Stanford University, she has held leadership positions at Fortune 100 high tech firms. Tracey’s recent blog on WFH being the new normal has some great tips and she shared some of them with us.
Tracey has some COVID specific tips for WFH:
- Zone your home- partition place to sleep, work, eat, socialize, personal space, work out.
- Spouses- separate zones, close doors, headsets, create space, continue your individual pattern separate (breakfast, lunch, work, workout) swap zones to create space (bedroom by day is our reading room at different times). Dinner together.
- Honey do’s? We all have a list, so it is good time to get it done.
- News- Stop the Drama- read or listen watching the drama only creates more anxiety get the new you need and then move on.
- Weekends- plan the weekend like a weekend- wash, laundry, food shopping, home chores, reading, cooking, movie, games, new projects, hobbies. I walk with audio books, try to make cheese and refinish furniture.
- Spring cleaning- Do a deep clean and organization you place in full.
- Budget and Taxes- it is a good time to really hone in on your finances, taxes, personal budget. Review what you need to live on month to month.
- Social- connect email, letters, cards, video chat, social media.
- Reach out to people they might be very anxious. I reached out to parents, sibling, all my family overseas, friends and work associates to check in.
- Make a plan for your kids- school, play time, help them understand what is going on.
- Exercise- Food plan, weights, stretch/yoga, aerobic, meditation- set a goal- diet, exercise goals? Body building camp? 10,000 steps a day if allowed?
- Health- focus on health this is not the time you want to be seeing a Dr, an ER or a health facility.
- Attitude- very important to keep a positive attitude. Keep busy and engaged with people and family.
