In January, Monica was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer.
After further testing, the doctors found that it had already spread to her kidney and a different type of cancer was found to be in stage 1 on her liver. Initially Monica was told her cancer was terminal but she could live with it with chemotherapy the rest of her life, although the cancer would never be gone. Since that time she has become very jaundiced because her body is not able to rid itself of toxins. Doctors have attempted to place shunts in her liver to release the toxins with no luck. She was able to receive half of a chemotherapy treatment but it had to be discontinued due to an infection that she developed. They are currently attempting radiation therapy. If this doesn’t work they are talking about sending her home and placing her in hospice care.
Since her diagnosis Monica has had almost daily visits to La Crosse as well as three hospitalizations. Monica does not have health insurance and they are quickly amassing large expenses due to travel, medical expenses, and loss of work for both Monica and Bill.
