UW-La Crosse Volleyball Team Hosts
2nd Annual Attacking Alzheimer’s Event
La Crosse, Wisconsin – October 5, 2018 – The UW-La Crosse Women’s Volleyball Team is hosting its second annual Attacking Alzheimer’s night.
The Alzheimer’s Association is inviting the community to a free celebration event prior to the match; including a visit from Coach Amber Dunn, food raffles and more. Donations will be collected throughout the match. All proceeds will go towards the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Wisconsin Chapter, which help the Association to provide care and support services for the 110,000 people in Wisconsin living with Alzheimer’s and their 194,000 family caregivers. The funds also enable the Alzheimer’s Association’s public policy efforts and advance critical research towards finding a cure.
Attacking Alzheimer’s began at UW-Stevens Point when head coach at the time, Abbey Sutherland’s mother, Rhonda Sutherland, was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s in 2013. Coach Amber Dunn was an assistant coach for Sutherland at the time and now serves as the head coach for UW-La Crosse. Dunn’s participation in the event is personal; “I’ve watched my grandfather suffer from this disease and of course I’ve watched not only Rhonda battle this disease but her whole family. It has had a major impact on myself and our team. We all see why we need more awareness for Alzheimer’s but also why we need to find a cure for this disease. We are asking the La Crosse community to come on out and support our team and this important cause.”
Similar events are taking place at UW-Stevens Point and UW- Green Bay this month. Since its 2014 inception, the events collectively have raised over $17,000 for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.
