SOAK IT UP! Completion Celebration
Habitat for Humanity La Crosse Area ReStore to Hold Celebration Event
La Crosse, Wisconsin (February 15,2016) – Habitat for Humanity La Crosse Area (HFHLCA) is pleased to invite the community to celebrate the completion of the storm water diversion project, Soak it Up!, on Saturday, April 23 from 9am to 3pm at the Habitat ReStore located at 3181 Berlin Drive, La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Community members are invited to take part in the ReStore Earth Day Challenge to breathe new life in old items by repurposing them as either a new functional or artistic item. Pieces will be displayed at the ReStore on the day of the event, and ReStore gift certificates will be awarded to the best entries. A sculpture designed and completed by Driftless region artist Karl Unnasch with assistance from Western Technical College students will be unveiled at the event. The public art is made from repurposed materials from Habitat ReStore and ties together the mission of Habitat for Humanity with the values of storm water diversion and reuse.
The Soak it Up! project includes four biofilters, 700 native plants, regrading to improve water flow and retention, a hugelkultur swale, a rain barrel, naturalized drainage area, food-bearing trees and shrubs, raised garden beds, a break area for employees, and erosion control products including pervious pavement. The site also includes 10 teaching signs explaining each landscape feature and the positive impacts of these kinds of local actions.
This project was developed by the La Crosse Urban Stormwater Group and HFHLCA with the support of many community partners including design and construction partners: Coulee Region Ecoscapes LLC, Driftless Trails Contracting LLC, NewGround, Inc., Paragon Associates LLC, Viterbo University, and Western Technical College.
Special thanks go to La Crosse Community Foundation, Paul E. Stry Foundation, and Sonnentag Foundation/County Materials Corporation for granting funds for construction and to Coulee Region Ecoscapes LLC, Invisible Structures, Inc., Prairie Nursery, and Trees Today for their donation of products.
Brian Steinhoff was diagnosed with Stage 3 tonsil cancer. He had two golf ball sized tumors in his throat; one on his tonsil and the other on his lymph node. Brian started treatments one week before his wife Danielle was due to return to work after back surgery. She had to take a leave of absence from work to help take care of him and with Brian not being able to work it has been difficult to make end meet.
Please support their family by coming to Club 16 in Sparta March 19th at noon for food, fun, entertainment, and raffles.
Each Mother's Day, SOPIHIA'S SAVING GRACE gives gifts to mom's that have babies in the NICU over Mother's Day. They are also having a Vendor's Event at Elmaro's Vineyard to help support this project. There will be baskets raffled off during the event (If you'd like to donate a basket please let them know)

The benefit is being held for Brenda Moran who has been diagnosed with Follicular Lymphoma. The benefit includes food, cash bar, live music, 50/50 raffle, Chinese raffle, silent auction, and much more. This event is to raise funds to help with medical costs and to also raise awareness about this type of cancer.
Three years ago Brenda was first diagnosed with uterine cancer. Brenda had some options of treatment for this type of cancer and chose to have a hysterectomy. The hysterectomy solved the uterine cancer and no further treatments for uterine cancer was needed.
Unfortunately two years later Brenda was diagnosed with cancer again. This time she was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Follicular Lymphoma. This type of cancer is slow growing however it is an intense type of cancer. Unfortunately this type of cancer is not curable, but can be treated. When Brenda was first diagnosed she underwent chemo operations every month for two days. The chemo treatments became very overwhelming for Brenda, just like any other chemo participant. Six months ago the doctors noticed that Brenda's lymph nodes were decreasing and decided that chemo treatments could be held once every three months for a day. Brenda has had many hospital stays, visits, and countless emergency room visits due to reactions from chemo including rashes, fevers, and insanely high blood sugar. She has had an unbelievable number of CT scans, having them every month for a year, when they finally decided it was time to let her body rest from all of the radiation. She is now getting one every three months. With everything involved with the cancer and chemo treatments, Brenda has had a stressful journey. Her cancer team would like to see more progress in the treatment and in the next few months they will be reevaluating everything and seeing what they have to do to get her into remission. We are hopeful she will go into remission soon.
Over the last three years the transportation and medical expenses have taken a toll on her family and herself both emotionally and financially.

A group of girls have been tasked to host an event to bring awareness to a community need as part of a project management class at Western. They will be hosting a food drive with a raffle of donated items provided by local businesses. All proceeds will be donated to the La Crosse Hunger Task Force which provides food for over 80 local food pantries. They are looking for non perishables, perishables, health and beauty products, baby items and so much more....
1 ticket per item brought in, 1 ticket per dollar donated

Rhonda Spece, is currently in the hospital with a blockage. Over the last few years she's been in and out of the hospital for similar reasons leading to having surgery and being out of work. Rhonda and her family are still paying medical bills from her previous times in the hospital and we're not sure how long she's going to be in the hospital this time and also out of work. She is one that always gives and ask for nothing in return.
Please join us February 29 from 6-8pm for A Night for HOPE, a community illicit drug forum sponsored by the La Crosse County Heroin and Other Illicit Drug Task Force, La Crosse County Prevention Network and Addiction Medical Solutions.
A Family’s Journey from Addiction to Recovery. Your Choice started with one family who lived through the devastation of drugs and alcohol. Their son Tyler struggled with drugs and alcohol for 11 years until he decided it was time to get help. Once he completed treatment in 2008, the family came together and decided they wanted to educate youth and families about drugs and alcohol so that other families wouldn’t have to experience what they lived through.
Chris Eberlein, MD., Co-chair of the La Crosse County Heroin and Other Illicit Drug Task Force, and from Gundersen Health Systems stated, “Many people do not understand why or how other people become addicted to drugs. We do know that drug addiction can be successfully treated to help people stop abusing drugs and lead productive lives.” A local survey, COMPASS NOW 2015 showed that illegal drug use was the top community concern.
There will also be available resources in the community, panelists on treatment, addiction, law enforcement, medical, current efforts in your community, and more! Everyone is welcome and the event is free. Community members such as parents, family members, caregivers, health professionals, business leaders, mental health providers, counselors, and others are encouraged to attend. Staff will be available starting at 5pm before the event for questions and concerns about counseling, treatment and resources.

Brittany and Ballzer from the Z93 Morning Buzz had the privilege of judging an employee soup contest at Empire Screen Printing. All proceeds from the event are being donated (along with an employer matched donation) to Sam Dahl and his family.

Thanks to our awesome listeners and our partners at Days Inn La Crosse Conference Center, we were able to donate $500 to Paws 4 Independence for Gotham's training. So glad we had a fabulous bidder in the Macklemore Zcare auction so we can help these great people!
Here's a little more background on these great folks:
Walter served our country in the US Army and was in Iraq from 2007-2009. He unfortunately returned disabled from severe PTSD and a Traumatic Brain Injury which triggers sudden and intense fear and anger. Luckily, he found Paws 4 Independence in Caledonia, MN that helps veterans and other people with varying disabilities TRAIN their own service dogs. Walter and his wife enrolled their amazing Rottie, Gotham Knight in service training since he was a puppy but they need your help to continue training him.

The Hunger Task Force of La Crosse provides Cooking Matters at the Store tours for clients in its food pantry network.
Cooking Matters at the Store helps families shop for and cook healthy meals on a budget as part of Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign. The next tour will take place on Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at 7:00pm at the Festival Foods Copeland Ave. store.
Says Shelly Fortner, Executive Director of the Hunger Task Force, “Families on a budget say that it is difficult to shop healthy when you are stressed with little time and even less money. This curriculum helps people choose healthier foods with their dollars and then demonstrates how easy they can be to prepare.”
Cooking Matters is a free program, working in partnership with our local Festival Foods stores. Each month in 2016, The Hunger Task Force will invite a partner food pantry or meal site to recruit clients, although anyone who is interested may sign up. Emily Schwartz, Festival dietitian, along with other tour guides will present an interactive tour through the grocery store.
The program has four main components and participants will learn how to:
1) Read food labels
2) Compare unit prices
3) Find whole grain foods
4) Identify three ways to purchase produce
The tour ends with a $10 Challenge. Participants use the skills they’ve just learned to choose and purchase a healthy meal for a family of four for under $10. Thanks to a generous donation of gift cards from Festival Foods Dietitian Team, they will take these groceries home along with a booklet with recipes and shopping tips, and a reusable grocery bag.
