Zeus McClurkin from the Harlem Globetrotters stopped in this morning to show us some sweet moves! He's coming back with the rest of the Globetrotters to play at the La Crosse Center:
Check out our interview with Zeus:
Zeus McClurkin's bio:
Zeus McClurkin is a testament to not giving up or letting obstacles get in the way of achieving one’s dreams.
He was cut from every basketball team he tried out for from seventh grade through tenth grade, but he kept pushing and finally made his high school team his junior and senior seasons. He played his first couple of years of college ball at a Division II program, but the departure of the head coach left Zeus on the outside looking in. Undeterred, he enrolled at North Carolina A&T State University, and he made the basketball team as a walk-on, beating out 30 other hopefuls in the process. Zeus earned an undergraduate degree in business management at North Carolina A&T and then a master’s degree in marketing and communications from Franklin University, based in his hometown of Columbus, Ohio.
Zeus is also a Guinness World Records® record-holder. On Nov. 17, 2016, he set the mark for the most basketball slam dunks in one minute, with 16. To give you an idea of just how challenging that was, Zeus could only dunk one ball at a time and was required to run back across the free throw line before each attempt. Zeus also set a new record for the most bounced three-pointers in one minute, with 5.
Zeus is known for his fun personality and crazy trick shots from places like Ohio State and the Mall of America, which have been featured on ESPN. Since joining the Globetrotters, he’s also transcended language barriers with appearances on popular Spanish-language television shows like Univision’s “Republica Deportiva,” and Telemundo’s “Un Nuevo Dia.”
He has accomplished all of this while dealing with exercise-induced asthma, a narrowing of the airways in the lungs that is triggered by strenuous exercise. To this day, Zeus carries an inhaler with him.
Zeus was introduced to basketball by his older brother, Robert, and cites his brother as the most influential person in his athletic career. “I fell in love with basketball because of my brother’s passion for the sport,” explains Zeus. “I wanted to be just like him, and to this day, I still can’t beat him one-on-one.”
An extremely versatile athlete, Zeus was on the swim team growing up and also played football, tennis, baseball and soccer (“The best athletes in the world today are playing soccer,” he says). He also played volleyball and would have loved to have played professional beach volleyball and represent the U.S. in the Olympics.
Zeus has this piece of advice for young athletes: “Be coachable. Be the player that the coach never has to worry about and can depend on when called upon. I have played a lot of minutes over players that were more talented than me, simply because I was coachable and understood what the strategy and philosophy was for each team on which I played.”

NATIONAL GOOD SAMARITAN DAY
Here's the lowdown from National Day Calendar:
National Good Samaritan Day is observed on March 13th. This day is also known as Good Samaritan Involvement Day. This is a day for unselfish actions to help those in need and to celebrate kindness.
The term “good Samaritan” comes from the Bible parable where a Samaritan helped a stranger who had been robbed and beaten and left to die by the side of the road. The Samaritan not only cleaned the man’s wounds and clothed him, but took him to an inn where he paid for the man’s care.
The term is used today to describe those who perform acts of kindness for those in need, especially those who are strangers.
Here's the crazy part, though. Apparently, this day was started in honor of the death of Catherine “Kitty” Genovese who was murdered near her home on March 13, 1964, in New York City. For Miss Genovese, had just one good Samaritan stepped forward that night, she may be alive today. Her killer was interrupted two times, each interruption witnessed by neighbors or passersby, but no one called the police. After his third and successful attempt, one person called, but it was too late for Miss Genovese. This event also helped lead to the creation of the nation's 911 system!
What an emotional roller coaster!
Either way, be nice to people. Today and every other day ;)

Today we celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women. We've come a long way and of course still have a way to go. International Women's Day always makes me think about how lucky we are to live where we do. There are still a lot of places in the world where women aren't able to do what I am here, right now. I am part of a morning show that is two women, in a building where more than half of our middle management is female. I don't think of it that way very often, but that's the truth and it's pretty awesome.

There's a lot of rad events in the Coulee Region to celebrate today, here's some:
Oregon Trail has come out in a few forms over the years but Target definitely upped the nostalgia factor with their exclusive handheld version! You have to insert a floppy disk to start the game, it takes batteries and the graphics are amazingly simple like the original. And don't worry, you can still hope the characters you named after frenemies get dysentery ;)
Thanks to everyone that came out to the La Crosse Fit Expo on Sunday! We had such a blast with you all and the Billy Blanks workout was awesome! Thanks to all of the fabulous vendors that came to teach us more as well <3

If Camila Cabello's "Havana" with Young Thug seems to be everywhere, that's because it is. A huge song that now reached another milestone to become the first first song led by a woman to top the Pop, Rythmic, and Adult Pop charts. Among all acts, "Havana" is just the ninth song to have hit No. 1 on the Pop Songs, Rhythmic Songs and Adult Pop Songs airplay charts (over the 22 years that all three lists have coexisted). Here's a chronological recap:
"One Sweet Day," Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men, 1995-96
"Livin' La Vida Loca," Ricky Martin, 1999
"Mirrors," Justin Timberlake, 2013
"Blurred Lines," Robin Thicke feat. T.I. + Pharrell, 2013
"Happy," Pharrell Williams, 2014
"All of Me," John Legend, 2014
"Am I Wrong," Nico & Vinz, 2014
"Uptown Funk!," Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars, 2015
"Havana," Camila Cabello feat. Young Thug, 2017-18

A local family suffered a house fire recently and lost everything. The mother and her 4 children, ages 5-13, relocated to live with family and a school employee reached out to Zcare for assistance. When we got in contact with the family, we learned they did not have beds, so we reached out to our amazing Zcare partners at Mattress Outlet La Crosse. They partnered with us to donate 3 pillow top mattresses and frames to this family so they can all sleep better at night. We are so blessed to live in a community that works together to help each other out. Big hugs to Mattress Outlet for their support!
